Theme Park Rides and Risk Management

People go to theme parks and amusement parks for a fun time. Exciting rides with lots of adreanlin is generally the order of the day. However, it is not without risks that we encounter in our day to day lives.

There are varying energies that can cause harm on a ride. These can be gravitational energy, potential energy, kinetic energy, electrical energy and so forth. The loss of control over these energies can be detrimental.

The bowtie is a simple diagram that depicts the risks involved once control is lost over the damaging properties (energies) of the activity (i.e. going on a fun ride at a theme park). Rides at theme parks are designed to be safe by design.  The adrenalin rush is delivered from the controlled operation of various energies by design, maintenance and operation. But once control of this energy is lost, the temporal zone to an an unwanted outcome or event can be deterimental to personnel safety, asset damage and reputation.

The bowtie method allows to paint this picture on a blank canvas and then determine the various mechanisms that have to be in place to keep the ride safe. The BowTieXP software is an enabler to understand the threats, capture the unwanted risk events and to determine the required controls that need to be implemented for safe operation. It can also capture various other types of information such as regulatory requirements, operational and procedural requirements, engingeering standards, technical standards and other codes of practice that need to be applied.

Incidents at theme parks need not happen. Some of the recent incidents that have occured at Amusement parks include the ones at Dreamworld and Luna Park in Australia.

The Deadliest of Theme Park Accidents of all times are

  • Fujin Raijin II Roller Coaster at Expoland - Osaka Japan
  • Water Slide at Waterworld USA - California, USA
  • Derby Racer RollerMason, Ohio, USA
  • Tidal Wave Pool at Action Park – Vernon, New Jersey, USA
  • Human Trebuchet at Middlemoor Water Park – Somerset, England, UK
